How Often Are Furnace Inspections Needed?

FURNACE INSPECTIONS

Opthmalogists recommend more frequent eye exams as you age. The human eye develops problems over a lifetime. Even eyes that are 20-20- vision on a younger person can develop age related disease compromising eyesight.

HVAC manufacturers recommend getting newer furnaces checked every other year, but once a furnace is 10 years old, it should be checked annually.

The steps performed during a thorough furnace inspection include:

Check the vent system for leaks or blockage

Examine the heat exchanger for corrosion, cracks or separations that can allow deadly carbon monoxide to escape

Check the blower and clean the components, removing the blower wheel to ensure that it’s free of dirt and debris

Test the seal on the blower access door to ensure it is tight

Check the air intake grills for blockages

Perform an amp-draw test on the blower motor

Check the burner for proper ignition and test the flame sensor for accurate function

Lubricate the motor’s moving parts to reduce friction and ensure the motor uses minimal electricity while operating optimally

Check that the electrical connections are tight

Check for signs of rust and corrosion on the electrical connections

Test the thermostat calibration

Test the unit’s safety controls including the high limit control

Check the belts for signs of wear or cracks

Test the system’s startup cycle for proper functioning

Check the furnace’s air filter to ensure the filter air flow is optimal.
