Tips To Service Your Gas Water Heater

Posted in: Updated: 31st January, 2024

Regular gas heater maintenance is a great way to make the appliance more durable and long-lasting. What is more amazing is that it will save you money as you won't have to think of replacing or fixing it.

The question that arises is how you can maintain your gas heater. Here, we have assembled some tips for that.

Check the Pressure Relief Valve

The pressure relief valve is an important gas water heater safety feature. It helps to release built-up pressure and prevents explosions. It should be checked at least once a year to ensure its proper functioning. Lift the lever atop the valve and let some water out. If no water comes out or flows after releasing the lever, it must be replaced.

 Inspect the Anode Rod

The anode rod is a crucial component of a gas water heater. It is designed to protect the tank from rust by attracting corrosive elements. However, it gets consumed over time and needs to be replaced periodically. Check the condition of your anode rod every 3 years and replace it if necessary.

Check thermostat settings

The thermostat on your gas water heater controls the temperature of the water. It is important to check its settings periodically to ensure it is set at an appropriate temperature. The temperature range for a water heater is between 120-140 degrees Fahrenheit. Adjust the thermostat accordingly, if necessary.

Examine the ductwork

The ductwork removes the toxic fumes produced by the gas water heater. Over time, it can become clogged with debris or damage, leading to potential safety hazards and appliance inefficiency. Regularly check the ductwork for any obstructions or damages and clean or repair as needed.

Drain the tank regularly

Draining the tank of your gas water heater helps to remove sediment buildup & prolongs its lifespan. It is recommended to drain the tank at least once a year. To do so, turn off the gas supply & connect a hose to the drain valve near the tank's bottom. Open the valve and let the water flow out until it runs clear.

Keep the blower area clean

The blower is an important gas water heater component that helps circulate air and maintain proper combustion. A dirty or obstructed blower can cause the appliance to work harder & consume more energy. Regularly clean the blower area and remove debris or obstructions for optimal performance.

For proper duct cleaning, get a vacuum hose inside your ducts and get them cleaned properly. This will improve the indoor air quality of your house. Call us at (720) 770-0055 if you need a professional service.
